Ankstesniuose tyrimuose spenelių erekcija neseksualiose situacijose iš esmės buvo ignoruojama. Mes iškėlėme hipotezę, kad tiek moterys, tiek vyrai patiria neseksualią spenelių erekciją esant emocinėms ir somatinėms (neseksualioms) sąlygoms, kurios sukelia autonominį susijaudinimą, ir siekėme užfiksuoti neseksualias spenelių erekcijos priežastis ir atvejus įvairiomis aplinkybėmis. Kaip ir buvo prognozuota, 181 koledžo studento savianalizės suvestinės parodė, kad spenelių erekciją asmenys patiria, kai patiria stresą, išsigąsta ir nerimauja. Dalyviai taip pat nurodė, kad spenelių erekciją dažnai patiria kartu su piloerekcija („žąsies oda“). Be to, dalyviai nurodė, kad spenelių erekciją stebi ir slepia ne seksualinėse situacijose, o tai rodo, kad jie suvokia, jog spenelių erekcija gali pranešti apie emocinį ir somatinį objekto susijaudinimą.
